KANSAS SAVES is available through the K-State Research and Extension, Harvey County Office. It is a campaign to increase peoples awareness of how they spend their money and to save money for the future. KANSAS SAVES, is not a savings account, instead KANSAS SAVERS SET a monthly savings goal of as little as $10.00 and try to save that amount each month. By signing up your goal with KANSAS SAVES, you receive a fact sheet on different types of savings accounts, and an annual subscription to American Savers. To become a Kansas Saver, check out Build Wealth Not Debt at the Harvey County Extension Office, 316-284-6930 or go to the website http://www.americasaves.org/kansas/. Registration is free and confidential.

The SHICK program at the K-State Research and Extension, Harvey County needs volunteers. Training will be in June. Volunteers will be trained to assist senior citizens to select Medicare Prescription Insurance, Medicare Supplement, and Long Term Care Insurance. Call 316-284-6930 to register or for more information.

 

Harvey County United Way announced a new 211 service from United Way has “gone live.” The number is toll free across Kansas. When people dial 2-1-1 they talk to a trained United Way call center specialist who will assess their needs and refer them to services that are available. The service is provided by United Way of the Plains in Wichita, Kansas, in cooperation with United Ways across Kansas. The United Way 211 call center has more than 2,000 programs in its comprehensive database of nonprofits, government agencies and community-based organizations that provide human services across the state of Kansas. Initially the service will operate 7 a.m. - 7 p.m., Monday - Friday. But eventually it will be open 24 hours a day, seven days a week. For 24-hour access now, individuals can visit our website www.211kansas.org.

The United Way 2-1-1 call center will also help connect people wanting to volunteer their services with a program that best fits their interests and talents.

 

 

Harvey County Health Department has materials available to schools and day cares to teach proper hand washing. Using a "special" lotion that glows on the hands when viewed under the black light, children learn the most effective method for hand washing and preventing transmission of disease. To check out these materials call Carolyn Carter, Health Educator at 283-1637. Remember - good hand washing is the best defense against communicable diseases.

 

Head Start is looking for children that are 3 to 5 years of age.

Newton Public Library announces new additions to its library resources. Newton Community & Healthcare Foundation is donating the following fund-raising and non-profit organizational management publications to NPL's magazine collection: Chronicle of Philanthropy, The Non-Profit Times, Grassroots Fundraising, and Gift Planning Quarterly. These resources allow the charitable and social services agencies access to current changes that can have an impact on their fund-raising efforts.

 

 

 

Newton Public Library patrons can now search OnDemand5.com, the Mitchell automotive repair on-line database, from the public access computers. This is the latest addition to library's on-line subscriptions partially funded by the NPL Second Century Endowment Foundation and the Friends of Newton Public Library. Child Safety Seat Check: The Harvey County Health Department is a Fitting Station for Child Safety Seats. If you would like to have your child or grandchild’s car safety seat checked for proper fit and installation, call Margaret at (316) 283-1637 to schedule an appointment.

Caring Hands Humane Society has a companion animal spay/ neuter assistance program available for low-income families of Harvey County, please call 316-283-0839 for more info.

 

Another resource to offer those clients who want to quit smoking: quit smoking help lines. People who want to quit smoking can call a toll-free number and talk to a person who will help support them in quitting. The lines are available 24 hours/day. 1-877-937-7848. The help line for pregnant women is 1-866-66start.

 

 

Health Ministries Clinic, located in Newton, provides medical services to nearly 1,000 people without health insurance in Harvey, Marion, McPherson, and Butler counties. The clinic will provide programs for groups and churches. Call 316-283-8466.
