Summer Program Enrollment: Sign up for summer StoryTimes and activity groups beginning May 1. The following summer sessions will be offered: Toddler StoryTime for ages of 6 months - 2 years, Preschool StoryTime for ages 3-5 years, and Backyard Safari for ages 6-8 years. Enrollment is free but space is limited.
Summer Reading Programs: Enrollment for “Catch the Reading Bug!” 2008 Summer Reading Program for children and “Metamorphosis @ Your Library” for teens begins May 12. Also sign up for free special programs and activities.
Computer Basics Class: This hands-on class on Thursday, May 8, 2-3 p.m., is for people who have very little or no experience using computers. Components of a computer, how to use a mouse, and basic computer tasks will be covered. Registration is required and space is limited. Free and open to all.
Learn, Share, Discuss Linux: The Newton Linux User’s Group (NLUG) will meet Wednesday, May 14, at 6:45 p.m. to share information regarding this open source alternative to Microsoft Operating Systems. NLUG meetings are free and open to all.
Internet for Beginners Class: This hands-on class on Thursday, May 15, 7-8 p.m., will help participants gain experience using the Internet and searching effectively for information. Participants should have a basic knowledge of the keyboard and using a mouse. Registration is required and space is limited. Free and open to all.
Yahoo! Email Basics Class: In this hands-on class on Tuesday, May 20, 2-3 p.m., participants will set up a free Yahoo! email account and learn the basics of using email. A basic knowledge of the keyboard and using a mouse is suggested. Registration is required and space is limited. Free and open to all.
Resume Class: In this hands-on class on Tuesday, May 27, 2-3 p.m., participants will be introduced to resume wizard from Microsoft Word 2007. Participants should have a basic knowledge of the keyboard and using a mouse. Strong resume points and job searching websites will also be presented. Registration is required and space is limited. Free and open to all.
Teen Advisory Council: Teens are invited to give direction to young adult activities in the Library. TAC will meet Monday, June 2, from 3:30-4:30 p.m. Snacks are provided. This activity may be counted for community service.
Book Totes for Sale: Look smart this summer carrying a black canvas tote with the Library’s logo on the front. The bags, provided by the Friends of Newton Public Library, sell for $10, with proceeds supporting the Library.
Play Baseball Trivia: “Take Me Out to the Ball Game” is the theme for a baseball trivia contest sponsored by the American Library Association. Stop by Newton Public Library for details and play for a chance to win a free trip for two to Cooperstown, New York. Entries must be submitted by September 1, 2008.
Display Case: Projects and awards of the local 4-H are displayed.
Services to Homebound Seniors: The Library offers free delivery of books or audio materials to seniors living in Newton or North Newton who are homebound and 60 years of age or older. If interested, contact the Library about ENLITE.
