Genealogy Databases

HeritageQuest Online is available to Kansas Library Card Holders.  You can get a free Kansas Library Card at NPL.  This database is an excellent place to view census data.

Family Search  Site of the LDS church.  It contains a very large database with over 400 million names.  It also lists the collection of their library in Salt Lake City, which is the largest genealogical collection.  You may access the Social Security Death Index from here as well.  It also has a section on beginning genealogy. Search published family histories, city and county histories, historic city directories, and related records www.familyhistoryarchive.byu.edu
RootsWeb  This database allows genealogists to share surname information with other genealogists.  It too has a good section on beginning genealogy
USGenWeb  This is a huge database where volunteers work together to provide Internet websites for genealogical research in every county and every state of the U.S.
Ellis Island Records  Find the records of passengers and ship crew members who passed through Ellis Island between 1892 and 1924.
Immigrant Ships  This excellent database lets you search passenger lists by name, date of arrival and ship name. 
Civil War Rosters  This database provides rosters of both sides of Civil War soldiers by state and regiment.

Allen County Public Library  in Fort Wayne, Indiana is the second largest genealogy collection in the U.S.

Kansas Library Catalog Search for books in libraries across the state.

Mid Continent Public Library  of Independence, MO has a good sized genealogical collection.  They also Interlibrary Loan materials.

The National Archives and Records Administration  (also www.archives.gov) provides info on how to obtain federal records.  It also has an excellent section giving advice on: beginning genealogy research

National Center for Health Statistics This site tells you where to write for vital records.

WorldCat Search 1.3 billion items in more than 10,000 libraries worldwide.
