Public Access Terminals

Patrons can access the Newton Public Library catalog on five terminals in the Adult Department and two in the Children's area. The terminals will tell a patron the location of each library item, if it is checked out and when it is due.

Public use Internet Access terminals are located by the Information/Reference Desk area on the main level. On the lower level, public use Internet access terminals are located across from the Childrens Services Check Out desk and in the Genealogy Room. Refer to the NPL Microcomputer Use Policy for access information.

Designated terminals provide public access to word processing and spreadsheet programs, CD programs and free web base e-mail. The Ebsco Magazine Article Summaries Full Text Select CD indexes over 400 magazine titles.

One terminal is designated for database searches via the Internet. It includes access to the Kansas Library Catalog and the Kansas State Library statewide subscriptions to FirstSearch and InfoTrac databases. These databases can access catalogs for libraries across the state and nation, including universities and schools. It can be used to locate books, videos, articles (abstracts and full text) and other types of materials that NPL does not own but could borrow from other libraries through the Interlibrary Loan system.

Patrons can request up to four Interlibrary Loans at one time. There is no charge to the patron to make an Interlibrary Loan request, unless the loaning library charges a fee.

One public access terminal in the Children's area has a number of CD programs on it, such as: Grandma & Me, and Primary Source, which is an index of magazines related to children.
