Advertising a Small Town: Whitewater, 1885-1979

August 16, 2022

Using advertisements and related newspaper materials, Darryl Claassen and Kim Fields will tell the story of Whitewater, Kansas, unfolding a history of determination, struggle, success and invention that defined not only the infrastructure but also the character of a town. Although at first glance this story may appear unique to Whitewater, it's actually the story of nearly every town in mid-America.

This is a hybrid event. Attend in person at Newton Public Library, or click here to register and attend remotely via Zoom. You can also tune in to a livestream on the NPL Facebook page at the time of the event.

About Darryl and Kim:

Darryl has spent his entire life in the Whitewater community.  His interest in area history is evident by the Whitewater Photo Museum he has established, and five Whitewater area research projects resulting in books: A Picture of a Small Town, A Picture of a Volunteer Fire Department, A Picture of a Rural School, A Picture of Countryside School, and Advertising a Small Town, the latter being a two-volume set.

Kim did not grow up in Whitewater but does have a direct connection and interest because her great-grandfather was the proprietor of the first meat market in town.  Her grandfather continued the business and eventually added a full grocery store.  Kim’s ability to research, advise, and encourage is invaluable and without it, these published works may not have happened.
